81-year-old Woman Found Begging On Streets Reconnects With Student Thanks To This Video

It all began when Ashik, a vlogger based in Chennai, decided to interview an elderly homeless woman he encountered on the streets. In a heartrending conversation, this woman introduced herself as Merlin, disclosing her age of 81 and her origins in Burma (now Myanmar). She recounted her journey to India with her husband, her life with him and her mother-in-law, and the unfortunate loss of her loved ones, which left her all alone.

What was truly striking about Merlin’s narrative was her fluency in English. She revealed that in better days, she used to be an English and math tutor. However, life’s twists and turns had left her begging for survival. Mohamed Ashik, moved by Merlin’s story and impressed by her command of the language, decided to offer her a lifeline.

In the video, Ashik proposed a collaboration to help her. He offered to create English instructional videos, promising to share the earnings with her. Merlin, with a heart full of hope, embraced this opportunity. In a heartfelt gesture, Ashik established an Instagram account named Englishwithmerlin.

However, their story took an unexpected turn when the video of Merlin’s interview went viral. It reached many people, including some of Merlin’s former students who recognised their beloved teacher. These former pupils, whom Merlin had lost touch with for over 15 years, reached out to her, rekindling their connections. Merlin was overwhelmed with joy and emotion as she reminisced about her students and the cherished memories they shared.

Today, Merlin has been relocated to an old-age home, where she envisions spending the remainder of her days in peace, as explained in Ashik’s video.
