Hair-Straightening Chemicals Increase Risk Of Uterine Cancer: Study
New details have been uncovered in connection with the usage of chemical hair straightening products and increased uterine cancer risk in women.

Hair straightening treatments often involve chemical products that alter the structure of the hair, making it straight and more manageable. Common ingredients in these products include formaldehyde, keratin, and other chemicals that release vapours during the application process. While these chemicals are effective in achieving the desired results, they may pose health risks when repeatedly exposed.

According to a study published by the National Institute of Health, researchers have suggested a potential link between the chemicals found in hair straightening products and an increased risk of uterine cancer. Formaldehyde, in particular, has been identified as a potential carcinogen. Prolonged exposure to this substance has been associated with adverse health effects.

Formaldehyde, when inhaled or absorbed through the skin, can enter the bloodstream and potentially affect various organs, including the uterus. Studies have indicated that women who frequently undergo hair straightening treatments, particularly those containing formaldehyde, may face a higher risk of developing uterine cancer over time.

“We estimated that 1.64 per cent of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05 per cent,” said Dr Alexandra White, head of the NIEHS environment and cancer epidemiology group and lead author on the new study.

He added, “This doubling rate is concerning. However, it is important to put this information into context; uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer.”

An estimated 65,950 cases of uterine cancer were reported across the globe in 2022, as per the published study. The cases have been sharply rising in the United States, especially among Black women.

Che-Jung Chang, Ph.D., a research fellow in the NIEHS Epidemiology Branch said, “Black women use hair straightening or relaxer products more frequently and tend to initiate use at earlier ages than other races and ethnicities, these findings may be even more relevant for them.”

While further research is needed to establish a definitive link between hair straightening chemicals and uterine cancer, individuals may consider taking precautionary measures to minimize potential risks. This may include:

1. Choosing Formaldehyde-Free Products

Opt for hair straightening treatments that are formaldehyde-free or use alternative ingredients that are less harmful.

2. Limiting Exposure

If you undergo hair straightening treatments, consider spacing them out and avoiding excessive exposure to the chemicals. Additionally, ensure that the procedures are conducted in well-ventilated areas.

3. Seeking Professional Advice

Consult with hair care professionals who prioritize using safe and regulated products. They can guide healthier alternatives and offer insights into minimizing potential risks.
