Pakistan’s disastrous campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024 has put the spotlight on Babar Azam’s role as a captain with the likes of Shahid Afridi and Michael Vaughan not in favour of him leading in the format.
While Afridi feels Babar hasn’t shown any improvement in his leadership skills despite being given a long rope as captain, Vaughan doesn’t see him as a T20I captain at all.

The former England captain further said while Babar’s got a ‘very good’ game in T20s, he’s not up there among top-10 batters in the world currently.
“I still don’t see him (Babar) as a T20 captain,” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz. “I see him as a Test and 50-over captain, in those formats in which he excels as a player. In T20 cricket, his game is very good, a pure player, but he is not up there with the top 15 batters in the world in T20 cricket. I think there are better players than him up the order.”
Pakistan started their world cup campaign with a shock defeat to USA before losing to India by six runs which left their hopes of qualifying to the next round hanging by a thread.
India won three matches to book their spot in Super Eight while USA won two, lost one while their final group match was washed out which ensured their qualification and also eliminated Pakistan.
“They (Pakistan) can’t blame the weather,” Vaughan said. “They should’ve beaten the United States and India. If they had won those two games, they would have advanced to the Super Eights.”
“This is what Pakistan generally does at World Cups, which arrive and beat good teams. I didn’t expect them to come close to India. They should have won that match,” he added.
Pakistan finished runners-up at the 2022 T20 World Cup while they finished fifth in the standings at the 2023 ODI World Cup, failing to qualify for the semi-finals.
“I don’t see Pakistan at the minute as a great white-ball team. Even in the last World Cup, when they reached the final, I didn’t think they were a great side,” Vaughan said.
