The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is slated to pick the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the US. Ahead of the official announcement, the experts have begun picking up their teams of 15 for the showpiece event and the latest name to join the bandwagon is former India pacer Zaheer Khan. He has named a pace-heavy side with as many as 4 proper fast bowlers, two fast-bowling all-rounders and three spin bowling options.

The top order options in Zaheer Khan’s squad of 15 comprises skipper Rohit Sharma, along with young batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. The fourth name in this line-up is former captain Virat Kohli who is currently the leading run-scorer in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
The Middle-order:
Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20 specialist, features in Zaheer’s middle order followed by Rinku Singh and all-rounders Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja.
The likes of Pandya and Dube are the two fast-bowling all-rounders in the line while Jadeja happens to be the only spin-bowling all-rounder.

The next name on this list is wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant who has peeped the likes of KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson to be the only stumper in Zaheer’s 15.
The Bowling Unit
As mentioned above, the former pacer has picked up Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh while the most surprising addition is Yash Dayal. The left-arm quick, playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024, has been under fire this season for his ordinary bowling, Dayal has picked up 8 wickets in as many games and has an economy rate of 9.43.
The same goes with his IPL teammate Siraj who is having an underwhelming season so far. The right-arm fast bowler has managed only 5 wickets in 8 games, leaking runs at an economy rate of 9.63.
Zaheer has also included the spin twins – Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in his team. Both the wrist spinners have been in great form in the ongoing IPL 2024. Chahal, playing for the Rajasthan Royals, is among the top wicket-takers with 13 scalps in 8 games. Kuldeep is placed next to him on the Purple Cap list with 12 wickets in 7 matches.

Reports suggest that Agarkar was spotted seated in the media centre’s commentary box at the stadium. His presence during the Delhi-Mumbai game means that a meeting to finalise India’s squad for the T20 World Cup could happen once the Delhi-Mumbai IPL match ends.
It had been said that Agarkar could meet captain Rohit Sharma in New Delhi after returning from a holiday in Spain to decide on India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, starting from June 1 in the West Indies and USA. The cut-off date for announcing the 15-member Men’s T20 World Cup squad for all teams, as set by the International Cricket Council (ICC), is May 1.
