'It was Crazy': Faf du Plessis Claims Ball Above Waist Height, Expresses Disagreement With Virat Kohli's Dismissal
Virat Kohli was given out after he reviewed a high full-toss for a possible no-ball but the TV umpire ruled it as a legal delivery.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis disagreed with the TV umpire’s decision to adjudge a high-full toss as a legal delivery that resulted in the dismissal of Virat Kohli during their IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

The delivery, first of the third over bowled by Harshit Rana, was above the waist but Kohli was out of his crease and Hawk Eye technology predicted it wouldn’t have been the case if the RCB opener was inside the popping crease.

Kohli reviewed the decision after lobbing the ball back to the bowler for an easy catch. However, with the TV umpire not ruling in his favour, he lost his cool and engaged in a animated chat with the on-field umpires before storming off the field.

“It was crazy, rules are rules,” Du Plessis told the broadcasters after the match. “Virat and myself thought that the ball was higher than the waist. I guess they measured it from the popping crease, one team thinks it’s high, the other doesn’t. That’s how the game goes at times.”

According to Hawk-Eye tracking, the ball would have passed Kohli’s waist at a height of 0.92 meter had he was standing and upright at the crease. In that position, Kohli’s waist was measured at 1.04 meters, which meant the ball would have been below the batter’s waistline if he was standing inside the crease.

Based on the available date, TV Umpire Michael Gough made the call.

A frustrated Kohli knocked over the waste-bin kept near the away team dressing room in anger.

Chasing 223, RCB suffered a heartbreaking one-run defeat on the last ball. They have now lost seven matches this season and managed to win just one.

“I am actually proud of the boys tonight, the way we bowled and fielded, we did give away a couple of big overs towards the end but I thought we kept them down to a par score,” Du Plessis said.

“We thought we’ll go hard in the batting powerplay, find those boundaries at the start of the innings. We were desperate. Full marks from an effort perspective, the way we put up the effort in the ground, the faces told the story,” he added.
