The Indian cricket team have always had the upper hand against their arch-rivals Pakistan in the ODI World Cups and nothing changed on June 16, 2019. Playing in England, India had already established themselves as one of the favourites to win the tournament back in 2019.
Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, the India got the better of South Africa and Australia before facing Pakistan. Their match against New Zealand was abandoned due to rain but it couldn’t disturb India’s momentum. Competing at the Old Trafford in Manchester, India put up a dominant show to beat arch-rivals Pakistan by 89 runs.
This saw India extend their unbeaten streak against the Pakistan at ODI World Cups on this day in 2019.
Batting first, India were able to post a solid total of 336 at the loss of five wickets. The opening duo of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma stitched a solid partnership of 136, giving India an ideal start.
Rohit was particularly impressive as he smashed 14 boundaries and three sixes to notch a century. He scored 140 runs in 113 balls. Rahul also notched a vital innings of 57 in that game. The then India skipper Virat Kohli didn’t lag and added 77 more runs before losing his wicket to Mohammad Amir.
After the end of the first innings, rain intervened to stop play at Old Trafford. Once the rain subsided, the original target of 336 was reduced to 302 runs using the DLS method. Pakistan were asked to achieve the modified total in 40 overs to claim a win.
During the run chase, Pakistan suffered an early shock after Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed in the fifth over for seven. Given the demand of the situation, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam combined for a huge partnership adding 104 runs for Pakistan.
India’s Kuldeep Yadav ensured Babar and Zaman did not let Pakistan get away with the run chase. He scalped both the players to leave Pakistan reeling at 126/3 in 25.2 overs.
More misery followed after Hardik Pandya dismissed Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik on back-to-back deliveries in the 27th over. Pakistan eventually ran out of balls at a total of 212 losing six wickets.
