Since making his international debut for India against the West Indies in July 2023, Jaiswal has scored 1028 runs in nine Tests and 723 runs in 23 T20Is played so far.

Star Australian cricketers like Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Alex Carey believe Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has the potential to become the next generation superstar. The 22-year-old left-handed batter has made a superb start to his international career. After scoring 171 on his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023, the Mumbai-based cricketer amassed a total of 712 runs in the five-match series played against England earlier this year.

He is only the second Indian cricketer in history to score more than 700 runs in a Test series. In addition to his heroics in Tests, Jaiswal has made a big name for himself in T20Is as well. He has 723 runs to his name in 23 shortest format matches played so far.

In a video uploaded by Star Sports Tamil on X, when Australian cricketers were asked to pick the Indian cricketer who they believe has the potential to be the next generation superstar, Smith, along with Starc, Hazlewood, and Lyon, backed Jaiswal, whereas Travis Head and Cameron Green mentioned Shubman Gill’s name.

“Jaiswal could be a generational superstar,” Smith said. “Jaiswal’s probably the next big superstar, I think,” added Starc.

“I think Shubman Gill has the potential to become a superstar,” said Green.

“Well, I think Jaiswal’s, yeah, the next cricket superstar to come from India,” said Carey.

“Next generation superstar, I think… Jaiswal,” said Hazlewood.

“I believe Jaiswal will be the next generation superstar,” added Lyon.

“Jaiswal, I think, looks like a proper cricketer for all formats. I mean, him and Shubman are very good,” said Labuschagne, who is Australia’s leading run scorer in WTC history.

“Shubman Gill, I think, yeah, I think he just needs more… As his career goes on, he’s ridiculous. Some of the innings I’ve seen, he makes bowling look slow. Plays off the front and back foot well, plays spin well. Yeah, Shubman’s going to be an absolute freak,” said Head.

While Jaiswal is yet to play for India against Australia in Tests and ODIs, Gill has faced the six-time ODI World Cup winners on multiple occasions across formats. He made his Test debut against the Baggy Greens in Melbourne during the Boxing Day Test in 2020 and has 272 runs to his name in seven ODIs played so far against them.
