The BCCI has announced India’s squad for the remaining three Test matches against England on Saturday. The selection committee waited for a couple of days to get fitness clearance for KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja as they had to delay the announcement. However, the duo’s availability is still subject to fitness.
Bengal pacer Akash Deep got his maiden Test call-up for the last three matches as the selectors decided to pick him in place of Avesh Khan.
He has already got call-up in India limited overs squads in the past – Asian Games (T20Is) and South Africa tour (ODIs)
The 27-year-old paceman from Bengal impressed the team management with his performance for India A side in the three unofficial Tests against England Lions.
He was the leading wicket-taker for India A in the series with 13 scalps in the three matches he played. He also claimed a couple of four-fers.
The Bengal paceman plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL as he was bought by the franchise in 2022 for INR 20 Lakh. He has played 7 IPL matches thus far in which he claimed 6 wickets. The 27-year-old is yet to prove his mettle in IPL and the India call-up will surely boost his confidence for next season of cash-rich league.
During his first season, Akash also impressed skipper Faf du Plessis with his pace after an IPL match.
“DK (Karthik) was really good but I was impressed the most with Akash Deep. He was excellent with the new ball, bowled very good hard lengths,” he said in a video shared by RCB on Twitter.

“I was surprised by his pace as well. It is very pleasing for us to have young fast bowlers stepping up,” Faf du Plessis added.
He made his First Class debut in 2019 and has claimed 103 wickets in 29 matches thus far. He has been a consistent performer with the ball for Bengal, meanwhile, he is also a handy batter lower down the order. The 27-year-old can hit the ball a long way as he has smashed 32 sixes and 27 fours in first class. Meanwhile, in 28 List A games he claimed 42 wickets at an average of 24.50.
