2023 has been a year of highs for Sunny Leone. Known primarily for her glamorous image and for dishing out sultry dance moves, she made heads turn with Anurag Kashyap’s neo-noir film titled Kennedy that gave her the chance to chew on a meaty role, thus shutting down many who felt that acting wasn’t her strongest suit. With Kennedy, she also made her debut at the Cannes Film Festival where the film premiered and received a standing ovation for seven minutes. It also received a euphoric response at the MAMI Film Festival.
Sunny bagged the film through an audition and according to Anurag, the film will be instrumental in making people look at her beyond her past as an adult film actor. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Sunny reveals that Kennedy is just the beginning of a new chapter for her and that it has helped her understand her acting aspirations.
“There’s always something more that needs to be done and places that you want to be or go to. Right now, especially after Kennedy, I just want to work on projects that help me grow as a person whether that’s on the acting side or the business side or a different avenue that I haven’t explored before,” she tells us.
Being a star is no longer a priority for her and she’s now on a journey of metamorphosis that is leading her to pick substance over style. “I don’t want to be the star of a movie. I would rather have a smaller part that has a meaning and purpose than an entire film based on my name, which isn’t very good. Kennedy was like that. My next film Quotation Gang with Jackie (Shroff) sir is another film which isn’t solely based on my name. It’s a smaller part but it’s great for me,” the Baby Doll and Laila star points out.
Currently 42, Sunny is in perhaps the best phase of her career. A while back, Anurag stated that he was ‘adamant’ to cast her as he needed ‘a woman over 40, who is sexualised by men around her, men who are in their 50s and 60s’. She believes that the ageist nature of showbiz is passé and says, “That’s something that’s part of the entertainment industry now. At literally any age, you can be successful or start your career. It just depends on how you want to start it and how far you can go.”
Sunny continues, “There aren’t any time limits right now unlike what it was 10-15 years ago when people could say things like, ‘Uska age ho gaya, she shouldn’t be working anymore’. That’s past now. Even the people who were working a long time ago are coming back and shooting these amazing shows and they’re these amazing actors and actresses. Those people who thought that their time is over are hitting their prime now.”
