Wayne Rooney on Arsenal radar
The Gunners' billionaire shareholder Alisher Usmanov is keen on seeing Rooney play for the club.

After a spell of light transfers over three years, Arsenal are spending it big time this year and are targeting a coup with Manchester United's Wayne Rooney as per reports. With Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain almost a certainty to play at Emirates with a price tag of £50million, the Gunners' billionaire shareholder Alisher Usmanov is keen on seeing Rooney play for the club.

The Russian billionaire is the second-biggest shareholder with 29.9 percent stake and as per reports in www.dailymail.co.uk and www.mirror.co.uk, he has urged manager Arsene Wenger to splash money on the unsettled striker.

"[Rooney] is a great player and [joining Arsenal] would be great for Rooney, and Arsenal too," said Usmanov as quoted in the reports. Rooney has been very vocal over a transfer possibility and it is learned that Wenger is ready to meet his 20-25 million pound fee and hefty 250,000 pound weekly wage.

But attempting signing Rooney would put Arsenal in a tight spot and with a cash fund of roughly £70 million left and alluring the striker would be a long shot, especially with Chelsea too in the reckoning for the striker. If Rooney leaves Manchester United after nine years, Stanford Bridge is the place he is most likely to favour.
