17% Citizens Store Banking Passwords On Phones In An Unsafe Manner, Says LocalCirles Survey

Financial frauds online have become regular headlines over the past few years. With many people not keeping their banking passwords secure, online thefts have gone up. A total of 53 per cent Indians say they or someone in the family has experienced financial fraud in the past five years, according to a LocalCircles survey.

At least 17 per cent citizens admit to storing their important financial passwords on mobile phones in an unsafe manner, said the LocalCirles survey. The survey also state that 34 per cent people share their passwords with others.

When asked where people store their passwords, 4 per cent indicated that they store passwords in the “mobile phone contact list”, 4% indicated that they store them “in password app on the phone”, 4% indicated that they store them in “another app/ place in the mobile phone”, 5 per cent stated that they “keep them in my wallet/purse” while 14 per cent “just have them memorised” and 16 per cent indicated that they keep them “on my computer/laptop”. In addition, 39% of respondents indicated that they “have another place/ way to store them.”

When asked how many people have access to their banking (ATM, Credit Cards etc) passwords, 34 per cent of citizens surveyed admitted to sharing their important passwords with someone else. Of these, 28 per cent admitted that one or more of their close family members have their passwords, 4 per cent respondents stated “1 or more of my domestic or office staff”, and 2 per cent of respondents stated, “1 or more of my friends”. The remaining 66 per cent of respondents stated, “no one other than myself”.

Meanwhile, at least 53 per cent citizens surveyed said that hey or someone in their immediate family experienced financial fraud in the last 5 years, a major eye opening statistic. When asked about where the fraud took place, people identified that Credit/Debit Card/UPI fraud, fraud by buying/selling classified site users, bank account fraud are the top types of frauds they or their family members have experienced in the last 5 years.

The survey received over 48,000 responses from citizens located in 367 districts of India. While 63 per cent respondents were men, 37 per cent respondents were women. A total of 40 per cent respondents were from Tier 1, 26 per cent from Tier 2 and 34 per cent were from Tier 3 & 4 districts.
