CHENNAI: New Year celebrations passed off peacefully except for some minor incidents in some parts of the city. While party goers let their hair down at hotels and resorts, youth flocked to the Marina Beach in Kamarajar Salai, Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar and the one in Thiruvanmiyur and Neelangarai. Incidents of drunken brawls were reported in some resorts on the East Coast Road, but police intervened and immediately brought the situation under control, sources said.
Thanks to the strict directives issued by the city police to hotels and restaurants on partying and celebrations, there were no major incidents. While cops had made it clear that any licence violations by hotels would be dealt with seriously, they had also sounded a warning that three or more people riding on a bike, rash and drunken driving and eve-teasing would all be dealt with severely. Anyone found drinking in public places, including the Marina and the Elliot’s Beach, would be booked and serious charges levelled against them.
The entire city police contingent of 12,000 personnel was on its toes, particularly at trouble spots such as the Marina and Elliot’s Beach. Traffic diversions were made at both places. Checkpoints were also set up on all arterial roads, including the Kamaraj Salai, ECR, Anna Salai and Poonamalee High Road.
Two fatal accidents in which a Tamil Nadu Special Police constable and a resident of Thyagaraya Nagar were killed were reported, but these were not connected to the New Year celebrations, sources said. The body of a 27-year-old man with a neck injury was found on Wallajah Road under mysterious circumstances. An investigation is on to determine if it was an accident.
