The Congress on Sunday claimed that senior leader Jairam Ramesh’s vehicle was attacked and media persons accompanying the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ were ‘manhandled’ by miscreants in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

The incident allegedly took place when Rahul Gandhi got down from his bus to meet people during the onward Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. With the sudden attack, the security guards of Rahul Gandhi got him to his bus.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on microblogging site, X that his vehicle was attacked at Jumugurihat, Sunitpur by an ‘unruly BJP crowd’ who also tore off the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra stickers from the windshield.

The leader also accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of being behind the attack. Supriya Shrinate accused the chief minister and said “Himanta, stop doing and getting these jackal acts done – you and your goons cannot stop Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.”

State Congress President Bhupen Bora got also attacked in the head and butt claimed the party.

“The car of Ramesh ji and some others were moving to join the main Yatra entourage near Jamugurighat when it came under attack”, All India Congress Committee (AICC) communications coordinator Mahima Singh told news agency, PTI.

“We informed the police and the additional superintendent of police is at the location now”, the AICC leader added.

Singh said Nyay Yatra stickers from his vehicle were torn out and the attackers attempted to put a BJP flag on the vehicle, nearly breaking the rear glass.

“The camera, badge, and other apparatus of a vlogger who has been covering the Yatra were snatched. Members of the social media team of the party were also manhandled”, Singh said.

Singh said a BJP program was happening in the area and some of the media persons had gotten off their vehicles to get some visuals. “They created a very intimidating situation for us. They have refused to return the camera of the vlogger, claiming that it was not snatched,” she added.

Updating on the recent attack, Jairam Ramesh posted that the SP of the district, where the incident took place, transported Congress leader vehicles to the starting point of the afternoon’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

He claimed that the SP was none other than the Assam CM’s younger brother.
