PUDUCHERRY: The Congress leaders and workers in the Union Territory offered special prayers at the Manakkula Vinayagar Temple on Monday for the speedy recovery of the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who was recuperating after surgery at hospital in America.Former ministers E Valsaraj, Namasivayam, Lakshminarayanan, MLA, and Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee President A V Subramanian, former Chief Minister D R Ramachandran, leader V Aroumugham and Congress volunteers participated. Former welfare minister M Kandasamy, who had not been seen in public for quite some time after the Assembly polls, was also present but kept a low profile.The leaders distributed ‘sweet pongal’ to party workers and devotees, who gathered at the temple.A few foreigners stood and watched with amusement when the temple elephant was offered a bottle of soft drink by the party workers.
