ED Arrests Jharkhand Minister's Secretary, House Help After Recovering Rs 35 Cr 'Unaccounted' Cash
The arrest follows the discovery of a huge sum of "unaccounted" cash by the anti-corruption agency

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Sanjeev Lal, Personal Secretary to Jharkhand’s Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam, and his domestic help Jahangir Alam after questioning them Monday night following the discovery of a large sum of “unaccounted” cash.

According to News18 sources, the arrests were formally made on Tuesday morning. They will be subsequently presented in the special court of the ED in Ranchi today. The ED is anticipated to request remand from the court.

A total amount of Rs 35.23 crore in cash was confiscated from Jahangir Alam’s home, who serves as the domestic help for Sanjeev Lal.

On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate launched a string of raids across multiple locations in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand.

These searches were conducted in connection with a money laundering investigation involving the former chief engineer of the rural development department, Virendra K Ram, who was arrested by the probe agency last year.

Ram, charged with accumulating assets worth 100 crore, was apprehended by the ED last February in connection with a money laundering case related to purported irregularities in the execution of certain schemes. A pen drive containing alleged transaction details with some Jharkhand politicians was recovered from his possession.

In response to the news of the cash recovery, Jharkhand Minister and Congress leader Alamgir Alam denied having any “official information” regarding the searches.

“Sanjiv Lal is a government employee. He is my personal secretary. Sanjiv Lal has already been a personal secretary of two former ministers. There are several government employees and we usually appoint personal secretary based on experience. It is not right to comment on the raids before the ED investigation is completed,” Alamgir stated.
