Purba Bardhaman is an agriculturally rich district of West Bengal. The demography of the district favours the production of food grains. The undivided Bardhaman district was the largest producer of rice in West Bengal. It is now produced in bulk at Purba Bardhaman. Being the rice-rich district, the farmers have now found a new way to earn income along with rice cultivation. Alternate farming of Guava. A good yield and high demand have attracted the farmers of Purba Bardhaman to adopt the farming of Guava.
A guava farmer in Purbasthali said, there are several benefits of guava cultivation. When guavas are plentiful in the market, the price goes down. Better prices are available during winter, he added. The farmer in Purbasthali said that cultivating guava in one bigha of land gives them around Rs 14,000 to 15,000. The yield is available from two years after planting. Better yield is obtained after three years. Guava cultivation produces a good yield for eight consecutive years after three years. He claims that alternative cultivation of guava should be done by the farmer himself rather than hiring labourers for the same. The profit distribution became low in this case, he added.
It was found that many people are now choosing guava production as an alternative farming. One of the reasons is that once a guava tree is planted, it is possible to get 7 to 8 years of continuous yield. Besides, guava consumption is very high among Bengalis.
Farmers said that they sell guavas by themselves. But many times the wholesalers come and buy guavas from the garden. Farmers say, guava has the best market during winter and fetches the best prices. This cultivation requires less effort and can be adopted by anyone. The continuous yield and high demand in West Bengal are now becoming the cornerstone for farmers to adopt guava cultivation.
