In Mysuru, Man Dresses As Yamraj To Raise Awareness On Level Crossing Safety Rules

There has been an increase in the number of cases of train collisions and accidents these days. It is due to people refusing to follow basic safety rules near railway crossings on the road. Many people click selfies or shoot videos on the railway tracks after the crossing is closed for anyone to pass. Due to this, there has been a rise in deaths. Now, to raise awareness among people about the safety measures needed to be taken at level crossing gates and curb the mishaps, the Mysuru division of the South Western Railway came up with a unique initiative which grabbed eyeballs.

As a part of the 16th International Level Crossing Awareness Day, which was celebrated to spread awareness among people, a unique awareness program was held near the Jayanagar Railway Gate in Mysuru. Level crossings are one of the hazardous parts of rail infrastructure, where every year people lose lives due to their recklessness and risky behaviour.

Near the railway track, a man was dressed as Yamraj, who is believed to be the God of death. The Railway department came up with the idea. As soon as the level crossing gates closed, the Yamraj advised the people how to behave and follow the instructions. He also warned people to not stand on the side of the track and click photos while the train was moving. Apart from that, clear instructions were given to not pass the gate with their bike or cycle. The mock show on the railway track was appreciated by many and was well-received for its simplicity and clear messages.

In other parts of Mysuru, similar awareness programs were carried out. Shilpi Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, held an awareness drive on KRS Road. She highlighted the importance of maintaining controlled speeds, while approaching level crossings and strictly adhering to the gate protocols. She also emphasised on refraining from crossing the gate when it is closed, about to close or opening. She also urged the citizens to never pressurise the gatemen to open the gates early, as they have to follow safety protocols.
