Former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has called upon the young medicos of the country to follow the guiding principles of compassion and care at their work.
“Ask what you can contribute for the welfare of this country,” he told an avid audience as he delivered the first Dr Ida Sophia Scudder Memorial Oration at the Christian Medical College (CMC) here on Friday. He urged the students to apply their minds to find ways to remove the pain sufferings of others.
Citing the examples of great women such as Florence Nightingale, Mother Teresa, Madam Madeline and Madam Curie, he advised the youngsters to “give until it hurts”.
“From these women of great minds, you should learn good lessons of life,” he maintained.
0Kalam wanted the youngsters to love their profession, go to rural areas to render healing services and develop quality and indigenous diagnostic tools.
Kalam was presented with a plaque and citation by director-designate Dr Sunil Chandy of CMC.
The event was organised jointly by the Vellore Christian Medical College Foundation in New York and CMC Vellore.
