Maoist leader arrested in West Bengal
The Maoist leader identified as Phoren Singh Sardar is wanted in 21 cases, including nine for murder.

Kolkata/Raipur: A Maoist leader identified as Phoren Singh Sardar has been arrested from Jhargram in West Bengal on Friday. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from his hideout. Sardar is wanted in 21 cases, including nine for murder.

He will be produced in court later on Friday.

Meanwhile, another Maoist was killed in a gunfight with Chhattisgarh police in Kanker district of the state on Friday, officials said.

"One Naxal was killed by police and Border Security Force jawans in forest near Borkalmurum village in the district," Kanker Superintendent of Police Ajay Yadav said.

He was killed in retaliatory firing by the security men after they reached the forest on receiving a tip off regarding presence of the Maoists, Yadav said.

Some rebels fled the spot after the police opened fire, he said, adding, police have recovered the body of the slain Maoist and weapons from the spot.

Yadav said there is a chance that more Maoists may have been killed in the encounter. Further investigations are on, he added.
