Sydney: High temperatures aided by strong winds spreading bushfires in South-eastern Australia.

The fires have already destroyed over a dozen homes and are now threatening to destroy thousands more. Thousands of hectares of lands are on fire and scores of farms are completely destroyed.

The blaze is likely to go on for another four days. Light rain and cooling temperatures on Monday, however, has helped in containing the fires.

Temperatures reached up to 44 degrees Celsius in some areas on Tuesday. Authorities said cooler weather and rain were bringing relief to South Australia and parts of Victoria.

Major roads leading north from Sydney were closed. Holidaymakers were stranded and serious fires and evacuations were reported in several other areas of the state.

Australia is scarred by bushfires every summer and every few years bushfires blaze into major cities, which have fingers of bushland weaving through suburbs.
