Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav's repeated attacks on the Congress reflected his fears that the minorities might desert him, a senior Congress leader said on Tuesday.
"We can understand why he is attacking the Congress. He fears since the party has never compromised on principles, the minorities may desert him and side with the Congress," AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry said.
Mistry, in-charge of party's affairs in Uttar Pradesh, claimed his party was all set to emerge as a potential force and the UPA would come to power again at the Centre.
On Mulayam Singh Yadav's statement terming those living in relief camps as "conspirators", he said this only showed SP president's frustation.
On Mulayam's assertion the Congress would be finished and the BJP would grab more seats in upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Mistry said this was his personal opinion.
On BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi talking about cleaning river Ganga during his Varanasi rally, Mistry, who hails from Gujarat, said there were also calls for cleaning Sabarmati which is very dirty.
On Union minister Beni Prasad Verma hinting at changes in the UPCC, Mistry merely said "he is an elderly person and we respect him."
