Based on a Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by KITCO, the Port had  formulated a conceptual plan envisaging leasing out its underutilised workshop complex, including the dry dock and slipway, for developing the shipyard for 30 years.The project is based on the lease model envisaged in the government guidelines for private sector participation in the major ports issued in 1996.Those who have evinced interest include the Cochin Shipyard Limited and Sultan Marine International.As per the bid conditions, the port would lease out its workshop complex including the building and machinery in around 17 hectares of land (with 850 metres water front area). Fifteen hectares of adjoining water area and employees attached to the existing facility will also be transferred to the developer.“The developer shall bear the cost of the employees for the period of employment with them,” port authorities said.They said the proposed facility would be capable of handling vessels with an overall length of 130 metres, beam of 25 metres, Maximum Light Weight in the dry dock position of 6000 tonnes.“The minimum facilities and services to be put up and operated by the developer include a new  dry docking facility, a ship lift system with transfer tracks and parking bays, an afloat repair facility, and associated facilities such as workshop, facilities, machineries and fire-fighting facilities, pollution control  and environmental protection measures,” sources said.“The developer can also commence operations with the existing facilities immediately after the take over subject to obtaining all applicable permits as may be required for its operation,” they said.first published:August 24, 2012, 10:32 ISTlast updated:August 24, 2012, 10:32 IST
