Concern over ineligible persons being nominated to committees

Blowing the whistle on the credibility of search committees that shortlist Vice Chancellor aspirants, senior academic and State Planning Commission Member (Education) E Balagurusamy raised concern over dubious or less-qualified persons getting nominated/elected as members to the committees.

During the DMK regime, a man with questionable credentials, who had no connection with higher education, was appointed as convener/member of some V-C search panels. Recently, an assistant professor (lecturer) was elected by the Bharathiar University senate to the search panel. “The convener should be a person of impeccable integrity and character and should have worked for at least three years in a position not less than the rank of V-C of a State or Central University. He/she may be a retired V-C or judge of a HC or any other equivalent post,” Balagurusamy, who is a former member of the Union Public Service Commission,   has suggested in a letter to the Governor Chancellor.

Similarly, only a retired person with a minimum of 10 years of experience at the rank of a professor in a State or Central University or former V-C should be nominated / elected to the search panel. Balagursamy said persons who are associated with any of the functions of the university concerned and those from an affiliated college or its management must be barred from V-C search panels.
