Removal as CWG OC Chairman illegal: Kalmadi
Suresh Kalmadi says only Indian Olympics Association can remove him as OC Chairman.

New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi who was sacked as the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) on Monday, said his ouster as OC chairman is illegal and uncalled for.

In a letter to the Sports Ministry, Kalmadi said, "I am shocked to receive Order dated 24th January 2011, illegally and arbitrarily removing me from the position of Chairman of the Executive Board and the Organizing Committee of the Commonwealth Games. At the outset it is important for me to point out that I have extended all possible cooperation to all the investigating agencies, including the CBI."

Kalmadi said that only the Indian Olympics Association, that nominated him as the OC Chairman, can remove him. He said, "The OC is an autonomous society registered under the Societies Registration Act. As the Chairman of the society, I can only be removed in accordance with the constitutional documents of the society."

He added, "I was elected as Chairman of the OC by the IOA General assembly on November 1, 2004.The IOA is an independent autonomous body and as per the Olympic Charter must remain free from Government interference. It is also relevant to point out that as per the Host city contract for the Commonwealth Games it is the responsibility of the IOA to establish the OC.The Sports Ministry is therefore not legally empowered to remove me."

Kalmadi also stated that the Order for his sacking has been clearly issued as a kneejerk reaction to the prejudice created by certain sections of the media.
