New Delhi: The designated TADA court in Mumbai on Friday sentenced Samir Hingora – the man who supplied AK-56 rifle to film actor Sanjay Dutt - to nine years' rigorous imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on Hingora.
The focus now shifts to Sanjay Dutt, who was also summoned to the court on Friday. Hingora in his confession had said Anees Ibrahim, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim`s brother used to visit his video rentals shop.
Hingora had said he was accompanying his partner Hanif Kadawala - also an accused in the case - to the actor’s house in Bandra. The duo had delivered arms along with Abu Salem, then a small-timer who graduated to becoming an arch D-gang extortionist.
The court has already sentenced Nasir Dhakla - the man who removed the rifle from Dutt's house - to 10 years imprisonment. The court is yet decide on Dutt's sentencing. Dutt had filed an application under the Probation of Offenders Act under which a person can be released on probation instead of serving the sentence in prison.
The prosecution though had argued that Dutt could not be granted leniency for being a youthful offender as Dutt was 34 years old when he accepted an AK-56 rifle and a Chinese 9mm pistol from Samir Hingora.
Also sentenced to 10 years’ RI was Shaikh Mohammed Ehtesham who participated in the Shekhadi landing and transportation of arms and ammunition. He has also been asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000.
Three more persons found guilty of conspiracy in the serial bomb blasts sentenced to rigorous imprisonment ranging from eight years to life imprisonment.
On Thursday the court sentenced seven persons to jail terms ranging from five years rigorous imprisonment to life, for their involvement in landing of arms and ammunition, transportation, illegal possession of weapons and conspiracy in the case.
The sentenced Ashraful Rehman Shaikh and Abdul Qadar Kewal to rigorous imprisonment for life. Shaikh has been fined two lakh rupees and Kewal Rs 50,000.
Five other convicts sentenced have been given sentences ranging from five years to ten years in prison.
Prime conspirator and absconding accused Tiger Memon's driver Mohammed Rafiq Biyariwala, who was also involved in Shekhadi landing and transportation of the contraband to Mumbai, was given seven years RI and asked to deposit Rs 75,000 as fine.
Shahnawaz Khan, one of the conspirators, who went to Dubai but did not attend weapons training in Pakistan prior to the blasts and was also involved in the Shekhadi landing was sentenced to ten years RI and asked to deposit a fine of Rs 50,000.
