Mumbai: Two Shiv Sena MLAs, supporters of Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, on Friday resigned from the Maharashtra Assembly, bringing down Sena’s strength in the lower House to 56.

The resignations of Vijay Wadettiwar and Prakash Bharsakhle, both from Vidarbha, has been accepted, deputy speaker Pramod Shende informed the House.

Wadettiwar represents Chimur assembly constituency and Bharsakhle is legislator from Daryapur. In July 2005, Rane joined the Congress after being expelled from the Sena.

Of the four Sena MLAs, who later quit in Rane's support and joined Congress, three were re-elected to the Assembly in by-polls. Shyam Sawant, the fourth Rane supporter, however, lost in the Srivardhan Assembly by-poll earlier this year.

The BJP, Sena's ally in the state, has 54 members in the Assembly. After Rane's exit from Sena, BJP leader in the House, Gopinath Munde, had attempted to stake claim for Leader of Opposition's post in the Assembly, which eventually went to Ramdas Kadam of Sena.
