Team Anna and its real agenda

Team Anna appears to be more concerned about projecting Anna Hazare as a reincarnation of Gandhiji than about building a true movement against corruption. Before plunging into the national movement, Gandhiji had led several struggles in South Africa. What Anna Hazare did before he turned up at Ramlila Maidan recently pales in comparison. He led no national struggle until he was brought to us packaged as a modern Gandhi by Team Anna. Unlike the Mahatma, Anna's pursuit is legal rather than on moral change. Gandhiji never advocated social change through the law. He believed in bringing about change in the heart of the enemy by nonviolent means. Hazare's way is the legal way. He believes that corruption has to be rooted out with stringent legislation. He says the corrupt must be hanged. Despite this glaring difference, Team Anna never tires of trying to seduce the people into believing Anna is the Gandhiji of today and that his movement is our second freedom struggle.
Another key element of Team Anna's propaganda is their use of the concept of civil society. The tendency to see the nation as comprising of 'civil society and State' is as recent as 25 years. Neera Chandoke, an authority on civil society, asks, "The civil society argument has been around for about 25 years. The problems of the world remain as intractable, even as the number of agents who seek to negotiate the ills of the human condition have expanded exponentially. Is it time that we began to consider the role of civil society? Is it time to once again put civil society in its place?" One does not know whether Team Anna has any idea of this debate, but it has been aggressive in its propaganda that civil society is above Parliament. The emergence of the legislature as the manifestation of the political aspirations of a society resulted in the separation of society and politics. Whatever was apolitical in society came to be called civil society The present crisis of values in politics is traceable to the attitude of passiveness and contempt that civil society has towards politics.

Hegel described civil society as a social group that is steeped in selfish economic pursuits, while Karl Marx called for eradication of a civil society composed of a selfish groups of individuals whose concern is only economic selfaggrandizement. Thus, the attempt by Team Anna to extol civil society may appeal to those ignorant of history but not to the enlightened. All selfish economic beings who belong to the 'I hate politics' creed may pose as the Anna brand of crusaders against corruption, but they can never really transform this country.

Demeaning constitutional fora appears to be another item on the agenda of Team Anna. Kejriwal has gone to the extent of declaring that Anna is superior to Parliament. He tried to defend this extreme statement by asserting that the Constitution itself put the citizen above Parliament, but failed to say in which Article it does so. This is a stealthy attempt by Team Anna to create a rift between Parliament and the people.
