To foster civic awareness among students, Maharashtra is set to establish ‘Temples of Constitution’ across 419 government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and 163 government technical schools.
These temples will be inaugurated online on August 15, 2024, Cabinet Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha announced during a press conference at the Maharashtra State Skills University.
“We have decided to establish Constitution Temples because the true teachings of social justice stem from our Constitution. Through this initiative, our goal is to educate students about the importance and sanctity of the Constitution. These temples will serve as a guiding force, shaping the minds and thoughts of the youth. The teachings of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar will be revered here, empowering students with the strength to drive personal and national progress,” said Lodha.
June 26 is celebrated as Social Justice Day across Maharashtra. Lodha said, “These sacred structures within the ITIs and technical schools are not mere physical entities. They will host various monthly programs, including workshops to educate students about Constitutional provisions. Additionally, campaigns will be organized to raise awareness among citizens, particularly marginalized communities, about their constitutional rights and duties.
The temples will host debates, seminars and discussions on issues such as Constitutional amendments, the role of the Constitution in contemporary society, and more. These activities are designed to help students comprehend their Constitutional rights and responsibilities. Furthermore, legal aid and support will be provided to students keen on understanding or exercising their constitutional rights. To deepen students’ knowledge, essay competitions and related events will be organized, and resources such as books and articles on various aspects of the Constitution will be made available.
Constitution Day and Republic Day will be observed with special programmes at these temples, making them not just places of learning but also of celebration of our constitutional values, the minister said.
