Twelve persons were killed and 21 others injured in an explosion at a factory in Hapur district of western Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. The blast took place after a boiler exploded in the factory that falls in the UPSIDC industrial area in Dholana.

Following the explosion, multiple firefighters rushed to the spot, which is around 80km from Delhi. Police said around 30 people were there in the affected area when the blast took place. Rescue and relief measures were taken up at the site, according to police. The impact of the blast was such that the roofs of some of the nearby factories suffered damage. It took three hours for the firefighters to tame the blaze in the factory.

Hapur, Superintendent of Police, Deepak Bhuker said 12 people had died and 21 were injured, who are being treated at hospitals. Some of the injured have been referred to Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi.

District Magistrate of Hapur Medha Roopam said the factory was given the licence to manufacture electronic items. “And now, it is a matter of probe what exactly was going on here. This is a sad incident. Forensic teams have reached and are collecting samples,” she said, adding that efforts are on to ensure that the injured persons get the best medical treatment.

Hapur IG Praveen Kumar said action will be taken against those responsible for the blast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “heart-wrenching” and conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased. “The accident in the chemical factory of Hapur, Uttar Pradesh is heart-wrenching. I express my condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this. The state government is actively involved in the treatment of the injured and all possible help: PM,” the PMO tweeted.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended condolences to the bereaved families and said that officers concerned have been directed to conduct speedy relief and rescue operations and provide proper treatment to the injured.

President Ram Nath Kovind also took to Twitter to express grief over the incident. “Deeply saddened to hear about the death of many people due to the accident in the factory in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. I express my condolences to the families of the deceased in this accident and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” he tweeted in Hindi.
