CHENNAI: With an aim to create awareness on the importance of conserving biodiversity and wildlife among youngsters, the Forest Department, Tamil Nadu, celebrated Wildlife Week by organising competitions for students and planting saplings at the Guindy Children’s Park. Observed from October 2 to 8, the department conducted drawing, quiz and elocution competitions for school, college and differently-abled students. The theme for the year’s celebration was wildlife and biodiversity conservation. Over 160 students participated in the preliminary rounds that were conducted in all the 32 districts across the state. The district winners were invited to Chennai for a state-level competition. “Children are the leaders of tomorrow. They need to have an awareness on the importance of wildlife and biodiversity conservation. The message will reach the students through such competitions,” said V Karunapriya, Wildlife Warden.A valedictory function that took place in the city in which chief guest S Ramakrishnan, former State Chief Information Commissioner, CV Sankar, Principal Secretary to Government, Environment and Forests, Gautam Dey, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Rakesh Vasisht, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests were present on the occasion. Prizes were distributed to the state-level winners. To commemorate the Wildlife Week, tree saplings were planted at the Children’s Park besides a wildlife photographic exhibition along with the display of products of the self-help groups and eco-development committees was also organised. “More tree saplings will be planted during the monsoon season,” the wildlife warden added.
