Skipper Babar Azam opened up on Pakistan’s poor campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they bowed out of the tournament after a defeat against England on Saturday at Eden Gardens. Pakistan finished their campaign with just four wins in 9 matches and ended up on the fifth spot on the points table.
After starting the tournament with a couple of wins, Pakistan failed to get going and lost back-to-back matches against India, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa which made the case difficult for them. They bounced back with a couple of wins against Bangladesh and New Zealand but it was a bit too late for them.

It was another dismal show from the Men in Green on Saturday as defending champions England, who are also out of the tournament, outclassed them in all three departments of the game.
Babar admitted that it was a disappointing campaign for Pakistan as they committed errors in every department and failed to hold onto their nerves in a match against South Africa.
“Yes, very disappointed with the performance. If we had won SA match, could’ve been a different story. But yes, have made mistakes in bowling, batting and fielding. We gave 20-30 runs extra. Bowled few loose deliveries,” Babar said in the post-match presentation.
The Pakistan captain also pointed out that the spinners were a big letdown for the team as they failed to take wickets despite getting assistance from the surface on many of the venues.
“Our spinners haven’t taken wickets. That’s had a big effect. If spinners don’t take wickets in middle overs, you struggle,” he added.
Pakistan, the 1992 champions, started the day needing to win by 287 runs and squeeze into the semi-finals at New Zealand’s expense.
However, that escape route was almost closed off as soon as England won the toss and chose to bat. It became an impossible situation for them while chasing a 338-run target.
Babar said that they have to now point out the positives and mistakes after exit from the tournament and discuss things to sort it out.
“We have to sit together. Let’s see. Will take positives and discuss our mistakes also. I will do the best to pitch in my experience,” he concluded.
