As per the beliefs in Hinduism, every year, 15 days are dedicated to the remembrance of ancestors. In these 15 days, the believers engage in the tarpan, shradh and pind daan of the deceased ancestors. The period is known as Pitru Paksha. This year, it is expected to start from September 17. Renowned astrologer provides more details on the dates of Shradh and its timings.

The astrologer, Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal from Deoghar, conversed with Local18, detailing the dates and duration of Pitru Paksha 2024. According to him, it will commence on September 17 and is expected to end by October 2, Sarvapitru Amavasya. During the auspicious days, the devotees must perform Shraddha; the dates and times detailed by the astrologer. He adds that there are several auspicious dates in the period, as given below.

Bharani Shraddha:

It is performed during the Panchami Tithi for those who passed away unmarried. According to Panchang, Bharani Shraddha timings will start at 4:09 am on September 21 and end by 2:43 pm on September 22.

Navami Shraddha:

This Shradh is performed for the mothers of your family, which includes the mother, maternal grandmother, paternal grandmother etc. The Navami Tithi is expected on September 15, stated the astrologer.

Sarvapitru Amavasya:

According to Pandit Nandkishore, Sarvapitru Amavasya is performed for those ancestors whose demise is unknown. This year, it is on October 2.

During the Pitru Paksha period, it is believed that the souls of the ancestors visit the earth and expect offerings and prayers. Engaging in Shradh is thought to remove the Pitru Dosha if it is present in someone’s birth chart. Some of the most important rituals of the period include tarpan, which is an offering of water and black sesame seeds, pind daan; rice balls with sesame seeds and barley flour, and feeding those in need.
