Actor Anthony Mackie, who has played The Falcon in various Marvel Cinematic Universe films and will be the future Captain America, elaborated on his recent comments where he talked about the lack of diversity in Marvel's hiring practices. Talking to Fatherly, Mackie said that Marvel was not racist, but had an "unawareness problem."
He said, “I’ll say this: I don’t think what’s happening is a racism problem. I think it’s an unawareness problem. With Marvel, I really think with most companies, they feel like they’re doing what they should be doing. In no way, shape, or form, is it enough."
"My big thing is, put your money where your mouth is. You can’t cast a Black dude as one of your main superheroes and not expect him to have that conversation. It’s just in my DNA to have that conversation," he added.
He further said that it is a huge opportunity for him to be a part of Marvel, and it is his duty to make sure the franchise is as good as it can be.
In an Instagram session with Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Altered Carbon actor had said that in the seven Marvel films that he had done, the crew was almost entirely White. He then gave the example of Black Panther, where the cast and crew was majorly Black and said that it was "more racist."
"Because if you only can hire the Black people for the Black movie, are you saying they’re not good enough when you have a mostly white cast?" he said.
