Saint Clare is directed by US-based Italian director Mitzi Peirone.

US-based Italian director Mitzi Peirone’s comic horror thriller Saint Clare is set to premiere at the 70th edition of the Taormina Film Festival in Italy, as announced by the festival organisers on Monday. Bella Throne, who will attend the screening, stars in the lead role in Saint Clare. The film will make its debut at the festival’s iconic 8,000-seat open-air ancient Greek amphitheatre overshadowed by Sicily’s active Mt. Etna volcano on Saturday, July 13.

Adapted from Don Roff’s novel Clare at Sixteen, the movie follows Throne’s character, Clare Bleecker, who is “a solitary young woman is haunted by voices that lead her to assassinate ill-intended people and get away with it, until her last kill sucks her down a rabbit hole riddled with corruption, trafficking and visions from the beyond,” as the provided synopsis puts it.

Thorne stars in the lead in Saint Clare while actors Ryan Philippe and Rebecca DeMornay will also be seen in the film in supporting roles. The movie is produced by David Chackler, Arielle Elwes and Joel Michaely. The original soundtrack is composed by Zola Jesus.

Peirone co-wrote the script of Saint Clare with Guinevere Turner who is known for her work on films such as American Psycho and The Notorious Bettie Page. Turner has also starred in the lead role of the dominatrix Tanya Cheex in Preaching to the Perverted.

“We couldn’t have dreamed of a better debut for our oneiric film than the gorgeously historic Taormina,” said Peirone in a statement as quoted by Variety. “We are elated and humbled, especially for a picture that delves into spiritual beauty, female sainthood and fate, there is no better home in the world than Sicily,” she added.

It has also been announced that Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung of the film Minari fame, will have its Italian premiere at the Taormina Film Festival. The film is the sequel to the 1996 storm-chasing blockbuster which originally starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton. It is part of the festival’s relaunch under the artistic direction of former Venice Film Festival chief Marco Mueller.
