The 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival 2024 is likely to set the premiere stage for awaited big films from Angeline Jolie, Johnny Depp, Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga and others. The event will take place on the Italian island of Lido di Venezia between August and September of this year. While festival chief Alberto Barbera is yet to go through all the submitted works, a clutch of them have reportedly made the cut, states a Variety report. On the other hand, a few other mainstream entries are also expected to be bowed out of the competition.
Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga’s Joker 2 At Venice Film Festival
According to the Variety report, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga starrer Joker 2: Folie a Deux is set to premiere at the coveted film festival later this year. A sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 Golden Lion-winning film, Joker, the sequel will focus on Arthur Fleck’s life in Arkham Asylum, where he meets Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). The two fall in love and escape from the prison, leading to chaos in Gotham City.
The film is set for its theatrical release on October 4, 2024.
Besides Joker 2, the Venice Film Festival might also hold the premiere of Pablo Larrain’s Maria, starring Angelina Jolie in the lead role. The film depicts the life of Maria Callas, a legendary opera singer also known for her controversial life.
Among others to join are Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, featuring Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman and Lesley Manville; Brad Pitt and George Clooney starrer Wolfs; Ron Howard’s Eden; and Julian Schnabel’s In the Hand of Dante. In addition to that, Johnny Depp is also expected to return to Venice this year as the director of Modi. The film is a biopic based on Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani and features Riccardo Scamarcio as the lead.

The 81st Venice International Film Festival will commence on August 28, and conclude on September 7, 2024. While the confirmed list of film premieres at the festival is yet to be released, it is expected to have an interesting line-up. Actress Sveva Alviti will host the opening and closing nights at the Sala Grande. Venice’s jury will be headed by French actress Isabelle Huppert to assign the Golden Lion for Best Film and other awards.
