Queen Latifah is ready to bring her life story to the big screen. The American rapper-singer will be featured in a new biopic based on her life. The biopic is part of a bigger project that will be produced under the banner of Flavor Unit Entertainment, owned by Queen Latifah alongside actor Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Jesse Collins Entertainment. There will be other biopics based on the lives and careers of hip-hop artists in the upcoming movie. According to reports, the untitled biopic will showcase Queen Latifah’s rise into stardom, beginning from a performer, becoming a rapper and winning the Grammy, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. The movie is financed by HarbourView Equity Partners.

On September 19, Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere, her Flavor Unit Entertainment partner, announced the biopic by issuing a statement, reported People. The duo praised fellow hip-hoppers, claiming how the music genre changed everyone’s lives for the better. “Hip Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to be able to collaborate with friends and colleagues that have not only a shared understanding but are able to tell these stories that were the backdrop of our lives,” said Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere.

Will Smith, in a statement, expressed his excitement “to work alongside Flavor Unit, Jesse Collins Entertainment and HarbourView”, reported People. The actor added that he wished to “highlight the incredible stories of” some hip-hop artists and icons. Speaking about Queen Latifah, the I Am Legend star said, “There is no better story to start with than the one of Queen Latifah, an undisputed legend who has both entertained and inspired us for so many years.”

Queen Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens, might have teased her upcoming biopic when she appeared for the Variety Power of Women cover story in 2022. She revealed her keen interest in presenting her story in a film form. “I actually have some things I’m cooking up. I’ve got to break some of that up. There’s so many stories to tell,” she said back then.

Queen Latifah is known for songs like Poor Unfortunate Souls, You Can’t Stop The Beat, U.N.I.T.Y., Ladies First and Fix Me, Jesus among others.
