Stree 2 actor Rajkummar Rao, in an exclusive interview with News18, addressed whether his projects have faced backlash or criticism. He mentioned that during the release of Badhaai Do, some members of the LGBTQIA+ community were unhappy that a cishet actor was cast in a queer role. However, once the film was released, the same people who were skeptical reached out to him personally and appreciated him for his performance. They felt that his portrayal was respectful and authentic, and that the film itself conveyed a positive message for the community rather than making fun of anyone.
Reflecting on the film, Rajkummar said, “I remember during Badhaai Do, of course, when the trailer came out, a lot of people, especially from the [LGBTQIA+] community, were of course not very happy with the fact that a straight person is playing this character. But luckily, when the film came out, they saw the film, and those same people have messaged me also personally, that they were very happy that I played this part. It’s because they could totally connect with it. They understood what we were trying to say with the film was something which was doing good for the community and not making fun of anyone.”
During the same chat, Rajkummar Rao opened up on the diverse roles he has played over the years. “I try and choose different characters. People should not say that Raj only does certain kind of cinema. I want to do everything — comedy, drama, biopics, horror-comedy, action – why not! I don’t want to put myself in a slot. So, that’s a very conscious decision that I challenge myself as an actor with different characters. Also, that’s what keeps me going,” he said.
Rajkummar Rao is riding high on the success of his latest horror-comedy Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana. The film crossed Rs 386 crores in India and surpassed the Rs 500 crore mark worldwide in just 11 days.
