Viagogo issued their first statement about Coldplay concert tickets being sold in black on their platform. Last month, Coldplay opened the sale of tickets of their upcoming concert in Mumbai. The tickets were sold out on BookMyShow. However, several users noted that the tickets were being resold on Viagogo at exuberant prices. BookMyShow was accused of selling tickets in black on Viagogo. Economic Offences Wing (EOW) began their investigation.
Amid the investigation, Viagogo issued a statement to clarify that they are not associated with BookMyShow. In a statement shared by Hindustan Times, Viagogo said, “Viagogo is not working with BookMyShow. Tickets listed on Viagogo come from a range of sources, including multinational event organisers, corporate ticket holders, season ticket holders, sponsors and fans who simply can no longer attend an event.”
Their spokesperson added that their “platform is fully compliant with Indian law – as it is in all markets in which it operates. Viagogo takes its obligations under law very seriously. When we are contacted by any relevant authority in respect of any investigation, Viagogo cooperates fully and fulfils its legal obligations.”
Coldplay is set to perform in Mumbai on January 18, 19 and 21, 2025. The concert will take place in DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The tickets were sold out last month but many social media users resold Coldplay concert tickets at massive prices, with the costliest tickets priced at Rs 7 lakh.
Addressing the inflated prices, Viagogo said that the cost “can change and tend to reduce over time.” They suggested fans to “wait for demand to settle. Ultimately, ticket resale prices are driven by supply and demand. Our goal is to provide a safe space where fans can buy and sell tickets, protected by a guarantee.”
The statement comes after BookMyShow’s CEO, Ashish Hemrajani, was recently summoned by the Mumbai Police over allegations of a ticketing scam. This investigation is based on the complaint of advocate Amit Vyas, who accused the online ticketing platform of black marketing tickets via scalpers and third-party websites at exorbitant prices. However, in a previous statement, BookMyShow distanced itself from scalpers and urged fans to beware of black market scams.
