When Mithun Chakraborty Was 'Disrespected' Due To His Skin Colour: 'I Used To Cry...'
Mithun Chakraborty had to struggle a lot before he became a prolific actor in Bollywood.

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his remarkable cinematic journey and contributions to Indian cinema. However, the actor faced challenges during the late 70s and 80s, especially because of his skin colour. He has often spoken about his struggles in the film world.

During a previous appearance on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs, he said, “I never want anybody to go through what I have gone through in life.” Mithun Chakraborty added, “Everyone has seen struggles and fought through difficult days, but I was always called out for my skin colour. I have been disrespected for a lot of years because of my skin colour….”

He further recalled sleeping on the streets, crying himself to sleep and struggling for food. “I have seen days when I had to sleep with an empty stomach, and I used to cry myself to sleep. In fact, there were days when I had to think about what my next meal will be, and where I will go to sleep. I have also slept on the footpath for a lot of days,” he added.

Now, Mithun Chakraborty is one of the most respected and prolific actors in the country. Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, which is set to take place on October 8, 2024. This year has become a lot more special for Mithun, given that he also was honoured with Padma Bhushan earlier this year. Mithun is also a three-time National Award winner.

Speaking about winning the Dadasaheb Phalke, Mithun said, “I have no words to say am spellbound with this. This takes me to the days when I struggled on the roads of Mumbai. I had to fight for everything.” He thanked his family and friends who stood by him through his journey.

Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut in 1977 and became one of the few actors who won a National Award with his debut film. The actor embarked on his acting journey with Mrigayaa and became a rage after his 1982 film Disco Dancer was released. The news of Mithun Chakraborty winning the Dadasaheb Phalke Award comes just months after he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
