The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has reduced the qualifying percentile for NEET PG 2023 to zero. The decision has been made to ensure that no PG medical seat goes vacant. Now, medical graduates from all categories can participate in the counselling process. Fresh registration and choice for NEET PG round 3 will be opened again. Candidates who are already registered need not register again. However, they will be allowed to edit their choices.
“It is for the information to candidates that vide Letter No. U-12021/07/2023-MEC (Pt-I) dated 20.09.2023 (Copy attached below), the qualifying percentile for PG Courses (Medical) for NEET PG Counselling 2023 has been reduced to ‘ZERO’ across all categories by MoHFW,” read the official notice.
There are around 70,000 PG medical seats across India. Out of these, 2,000-2500 seats remain vacant each year. After two rounds of counselling for NEET-PG 2023, several seats have been lying vacant in specialities such as physiology, anatomy and biochemistry, an official told Times of India. The official further added that it is a one-time move.
The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test Post Graduate (NEET PG ) cut-off till now was set at 50 per cent for general/unreserved category students, 45 per cent for students with disabilities (PwD), and 40 per cent for students who belong to other reserved groups.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) have been pushing the health ministry for a revision in the NEET PG cut-off over the past few days. These organisations demanded a cut-off reduction of up to 30 per cent so that the majority of seats in both the clinical and non-clinical branches could be filled up.
The IMA has welcomed the decision to reduce the NEET PG cut-off. “There is another feather in the cap of National IMA HQs, getting glorifying success in its endeavour for reduction in the Percentile for admission to NEET PG Examination to zero.,” they posted on X. (sic)
