The ICC has named the officials for the final of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup which will be played between India and Australia this Sunday.
England duo of Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough will be the on-field umpires for the blockbuster clash between the two rivals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Kettleborough will be standing for the second time in an ODI world cup final having been given the responsibility eight years back when Australia won a record-extending fifth title in front of 93000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Both Kettleborough and Illingworth were promoted by the ICC into their international list on the same day in November 2009.
Kettleborough won the award thrice in a row between 2014 and 2015 while Illingworth won it in 2019 and 2022.
Both the Englishmen have been recipients of the David Shepherd Trophy, awarded to the ICC’s Umpire of the Year.
Kettlborough added another feather to his umpiring career during the 2023 world cup when he completed a century of ODIs into the role taking the field for a league match between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.
The final will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium, world’s largest cricket stadium by capacity, in Ahmedabad on November 19.
India are aiming to replicate their 2011 show when they became the first ever team in history to lift the trophy on home soil, beating Sri Lanka in the final played at the Wankhede Stadium.
Since India’s triumph, the next two world cups have been won by the hosts – Australia in 2015, England in 2019.
Australia are the most successful team in world cup history having won five titles so far including three in a row between 1999 and 2007.
