New Delhi: The first bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama is likely to take place in September.
US Deputy Secretary of State William J Burns who met Modi on Friday in New Delhi extended Obama's invitation to the Prime Minister. US Secretary of State John Kerry had invited Modi to Washington after he led the NDA to a historic victory in the Lok Sabha elections but an official invite was sent out only on Friday.
Sources close to the PM said that he was looking forward to a result-oriented visit to the USA with concrete outcomes. Modi will be travelling to Washington to take part in UNGA meet.
The visiting US official had on Thursday said that the Modi-led BJP won a very a strong mandate to invigorate India's development and its rise on the world stage.
"America has deep stake in India's success and PM Modi's success. As the world's two largest democracies and two of world's largest economies, USA and India share stake in each other's success in each. Our partnership can contribute enormously to a safer world," he said.
Obama was amongst the first world leaders who congratulated Modi when he was sworn-in as the 15th PM.
The meeting between Modi and Obama assumes importance as this will be the first time Modi will visit the US after he was denied a visa by the George Bush administration after the 2002 Gujarat riots under the International Religious Freedom Act.
