New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday announced its decision to put up party candidates in 316 seats while leaving out 50 seats for its electoral allies JD(U) and Apna Dal in the crucial UP Assembly polls.
The party also offered Rajnath Singh's son Amit Singh a ticket to contest from Cherae Gaon Assembly seat as it finalised more than 300 names for the polls.
The party's central election committee, which finalised the list of candidates, re-nominated all its sitting MLAs, barring the defectors. State BJP leaders Kesrinath Tripathi and Lalji Tandon were among the prominent leaders in the list of candidates declared so far.
The party's chief ministerial candidate, Kalyan Singh, however, will not contest the polls. BJP sources said the party will give some 50 seats to its allies Apna Dal and the Janata Dal-United as part of an electoral understanding.
The party has tied up with the Apna Dal, which has a support base in the state's Kurmi community, in a bid to win OBC votes for the alliance.
However, the party's decision to pick party chief Rajnath Singh's son as an election candidate raised many an eyebrow as the decision marked a tilt towards "dynastic politics" in a party that has always been vocal against "dynastic principles."
Last month, the BJP fielded Yashodhra Raje, the sister of Rajastan Chief Minister Vasundare Raje, for a bye-election in Gwalior.
