“Hum Aisa Cricket Nahi Khelte Hain Ki ….” – Rohit Sharma’s Reply to New Zealand’s Superior World Cup Record vs India Will Leave you in Splits
India have not beaten New Zealand since the 2003 World Cup, and when Shubman Gill took to his captain Rohit Sharma and inquired about the same, things took an amusing turn.

India are off to a dream start the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. The Men in Blue are in red-hot form as the hosts have trampled over all four of their opponents till date, securing four out of four wins.

Yet, they remain second in the table to none other than their next opponent, the dreaded New Zealand.

The reason behind why the Blackcaps are dreaded is rather simple: India just can’t seem to beat them.

Despite India’s stellar form in the cricketing world across all formats, the Kiwis have remained as their constant kryptonite.

In fact, India have not beaten New Zealand since the 2003 World Cup, with the BlackCaps setting an unprecedented 5-0 winning streak over the hosts thus far.

So, the Indians can rest assured that they will be in for their sternest test of the tournament so far when they take on table-toppers New Zealand in Dharamshala on Sunday.

Preceeding the match-up in the World Cup, a video was posted by the BCCI in which Shubman Gill can be seen playfully challenging Rohit Sharma with some tricky trivia questions related to India vs New Zealand matches in the World Cup.

And when Gill took to his captain and inquired about the outcome of their upcoming match-up against the Kiwis, things took an awkward turn.

Shubman Gill: Someone asked me in the press conference that we haven’t beaten New Zealand in an ICC tournament since 2003…

Rohit Sharma: That’s true. But we are playing good cricket and that’s all we can do from our end.

Shubman Gill: So, will we definitely end the streak on Sunday?

Rohit Sharma: See we don’t play the kind of cricket where we guarantee anything. When we reach the ground, we’ll have to do what we are doing as a team. We can’t think too far ahead. Yes, we’ve not had the result in the past…

The World Cup history, on top of the recent history, is also not on India’s side. Both New Zealand and India have faced off against each other for a total of nine times in the tournament, with New Zealand clincing five wins and India three wins.

Their most recent bout in the tournament took place in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup, where New Zealand once again triumphed over the Indians to progress to the final, which they eventually lost.

Will it be a repeat for New Zealand, or revenge for India? It all is set ot unfold on Sunday in Dharamshala.

What's your reaction?
