Mountain View, California-based giant Google is in the works of updating its augmented reality software development kit (SDK) for smartphones with dual rear cameras. The new update pertains to how Google distributes its ARCore features, which now gets “Dual camera stereo depth on supported devices,” according to the changelog released by Google. For now, it appears that the support is only limited to the Google Pixel 4 and the Google Pixel 4XL, but Google has released a list of compatible ARCore devices on Google’s developer site, which also includes smartphones from Huawei and Apple iPhones.
This means that Google’s latest Pixel smartphones (Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a) won’t see the benefits for now. This, according to report, may be due to the ultra-wide cameras on the new Pixel smartphones instead of the Telephoto lenses on the Pixel 4 series. The list of devices mentioned by Google includes all Android smartphones that support OpenGL ES 3.0. This includes devices from Huawei and Apple’s iPhones.
Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL did not make it to the Indian market, similar to the Google Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5. The Google Pixel 4a is the latest Pixel smartphone we can buy and there is still some time for Google to bring the latest AR SDK support to the Pixel 4a. The Google Pixel 4a is priced at Rs 31,999 for the sole 6GB RAM + 128GB variant in India.
