iPhone Users Get New Repair Assistant Tool That Helps Them Fix Issues: Here's How
Apple is changing ways iPhone users can fix their devices using genuine parts and giving them the assistance for doing it the right way.

Apple has revealed a new feature in iOS 18 that will enable users to configure parts in iPhones after repair work. This new “Repair Assistant” feature allows consumers to make sure their gadget works properly after having it repaired with genuine Apple parts, reported MacRumors. The Repair Assistant is only compatible with genuine Apple parts.

Apple said it would allow repairs using previously acquired genuine parts. To make this possible, the company wants consumers to match the serial number of their device with that of a new part delivered by Apple, a process known as parts pairing.

Users who earlier installed aftermarket or used components frequently received alerts claiming that Apple could not validate the new part.

In some circumstances, critical functions such as Face ID and Touch ID sensors may stop working altogether. This issue is addressed by the new Repair Assistant function, which allows for the calibration of genuine Apple parts, whether new or used.

As a result, customers and repair shops will no longer need to submit the serial number when ordering most items from the Self Service Repair Store. To start the program, the upgrade will affect screens, batteries, and cameras, with eventual support for commonly used biometric sensors such as Face ID and Touch ID.

Meanwhile, Apple is also stepping up its efforts to trace used iPhone components. It announced an expansion of its Activation Lock technology to encompass iPhone parts. This feature is intended to deter thieves from utilising stolen or lost devices. Apple explained that if a device in repair identifies a part from another device with an Activation Lock or Lost Mode set, the calibration capabilities for that part will be limited.

The Repair Assistant function can be found in the Parts and Service area of the Settings app’s About menu, but only users who have installed iOS 18 and have a compatible part can access it. This functionality can also be used to configure components installed before the introduction of iOS 18, such as third-party batteries replaced with authentic Apple batteries.
