Pandas are such adorable animals, don’t you think? They are fluffy, goofy, and adorable, and the videos available on the internet featuring pandas can instantly boost one’s serotonin level. But a video of a zoo in China is doing rounds on social media for putting fake pandas on display. The zoo receives the backlash after the authorities painted two chow-chow dogs black and white to resemble pandas. Reportedly, the video is from Taizhou Zoo in Jiangsu Province. The video has left the netizens divided.
In the viral video, the two chow-chow dogs resembling pandas can be seen painted in black and white colour. Their manes can be seen trimmed to resemble little pandas. In the video, the fake pandas can be seen looking at visitors curiously from their cages. Reportedly, the fake pandas were unveiled on May 1, 2024. They were put on display every day between 8 am and 5 pm, where visitors flock together to look at them until word of the zoo’s deception began to spread. The video was shared on an X handle named @shanghaidaily.

The video was uploaded a few days ago and since then it has sparked outrageous reactions. Netizens criticised zoo authorities for animal cruelty and deception. However, The zoo has defended its decision to place dyed dogs instead of pandas. According to several reports, a spokesperson for the zoo was quoted saying while responding to the backlash, “There are no panda bears at the zoo and we wanted to do this as a result. People also dye their hair. Natural dye can be used on dogs if they have long fur.”
This was not the first time a zoo in China has been accused of engaging in such deception. Earlier in August 2023, a similar incident occurred at Hangzhou Zoo, where visitors said that a human was made to wear the costume of a bear.
