Odisha Man Sets Guinness World Records By Running 68 Km On Treadmill For 12 Hours

Sumit Singh, a native of Odisha’s Rourkela, has brought great honour to India by achieving a remarkable feat as he set a Guinness World Records for continuously running on a treadmill for an astonishing 12 hours.

According to the official Guinness World Records website, Sumit covered an impressive 68.04 kilometres during this extraordinary accomplishment.

His record-breaking attempt took place on March 12, 2024, commencing from 8:15 am until 8:20 pm on Basant Pathagar premises.

“The greatest distance run on a manual treadmill in 12 hours (male) is 68.04 km (42.27 mi) and was achieved by Sumit Kumar Singh (India) in Rourkela, Odisha, India, on March 12, 2024,” reads the certificate.

Additionally, the website highlights that Sumit undertook this record-breaking challenge to create awareness for mental health and promote the benefits of staying active. “I am delighted after creating a Guinness World Records

. My main objective is to make people beyond the age of 30 aware of fitness and mental health issues. People in this age group always struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle. My aim is also to represent India in the 24-hour world championship,” he told Times of India.

Before this feat, as per the reports, Sumit had already showcased his incredible endurance by running for 12 hours and 24 hours on the track, covering distances of 102 kilometres and 161 kilometres, respectively.

But Sumit’s achievement didn’t stop there. Last year, he set another record by completing the most marathons within a month. Between April 25 to May 24, Sumit finished an impressive 33 marathons. His remarkable accomplishment earned him a certificate from The International Book of Records as the world record holder for the completing most full marathons in a single month.

Reportedly, Sumit has also qualified to represent India in South Africa for the COMRADES race. He aims to run for 86 kilometres within 12 hours. The race will be held in June this year.

Sumit Kumar Singh, the son of Sanjay Kumar Singh and Meera Devi, resides in Basanti Colony in Rourkela. He is married and has a two-year-old son. Sumit works in a private firm located at Kalunga.

India holds over 60 records in the Guinness World Records. Among these records, in 2023, Rooba Ganesan from Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, set a remarkable feat by setting the Guinness World Record for the longest time to hold the eight-angle pose in yoga for 4 minutes and 35.35 seconds.
