Kathmandu: At least 80 mountaineers including one from India have successfully scaled the Mt Manaslu, the eighth highest peak in the world, in this year's first autumn ascent of the mountain in western Nepal.
The eighty-member group also included 45 Nepalese Sherpas and 30 Chinese.
Dipankar Ghose, who hails from Calcutta, was the Indian member who successfully climbed the mountain at an altitude of 8,163 metres (26,781 ft) above sea level.
"Nearly seven dozen people reached atop Mt. Manaslu as the peak witnessed a fair weather since early morning today, allowing the climbers to make the year's first autumn ascent of the mountain," said Mingma Sherpa, Managing Director at Seven Summit Treks.
According to Mingma, over 30 climbers have stood atop the summit of Mt Manaslu till 9:00 am after rope fixing Sherpas first reached the top of the peak at around 6:00 am.
At least 90 climbers have planned to climb the peak.
Mt Manaslu is located in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas in the west-central part of Nepal.
Its name, which means "mountain of the spirit", comes from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning "intellect" or "soul".
It was first climbed on May 9, 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition.
