Three prison inmates may have killed two people who were aboard a yacht after hijacking the vessel. The prisoners escaped jail last week and were attempting to make their way from Grenada to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, according to Grenada police.
A report by news outlet CNN quoting Grenada police said after escaping the three inmates hijacked a yacht in St. George, Grenada. Grenada is a small island nation in the Caribbean.
In their statement, Grenada police said they are “currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process”. “It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens,” the statement said.
The three occupants, however, are back in custody and police have not revealed how they were able to catch them.
Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Anita Stanislaus were charged on suspicion of robbery with violence. The police said that Mitchell faces other charges including rape, indecent assault and causing harm.
Grenadian cops said the men had been at the South St George Police Station before escaping custody on Sunday. They were recaptured on Wednesday.
“We are aware of these reports involving US citizens. We are monitoring the situation and seeking additional information,” a US State Department spokesperson was quoted as saying by CNN.
American authorities are working with local law enforcement officials on the incident, the spokesperson added.
A separate report by local broadcaster ABC7’s WJLA identified the American couple that may have been murdered by the prisoners. Family members of Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel said that the couple disappeared from their yacht “Simplicity”. Simplicity, the yacht, was docked in Grenada.
According to a statement from the couple’s sailing association, the yacht was anchored and abandoned off a beach on the south coast of the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. The boat was found with “evidence of apparent violence”.
